Akal University’s NSS Unit adjoins the National Health Mission, which underscores the significance of taking proactive measures to make India healthy and prosperous. The NSS Unit of Akal University has hosted a 7-day camp with a theme entitled “Youth for Swasth Bharat.” Our students joined hands and put passionate efforts into various activities, such as awareness campaigns, village surveys, and lectures by health experts.
Day 1: Attending Expert Sessions
At the beginning of day 1 of the camp, Dr. Janpreet Singh, NSS Coordinator, gave an address. He made the participants aware of the outline of the 7-day program. They also received the work dairies to record day-to-day activities. Dr. Divya Gupta Jindal, an Obstetrics and Gynaecology expert, enlightened the “Empowering Women: Understanding PCOD/PCOS” session. Students were also exposed to the waste segregation unit on the Akal campus to understand waste management techniques. After a lunch break, a lecture by Mr. Naresh Pathania, a first aid trainer from Red Cross Bhawan, Bathinda attended by the students.
Day 2: Interaction with Dr. Gursimaran Kaur
After an active yoga routine, students attended lectures by Dr. Gursimran Kaur, Block Educator, and Civil Hospital Talwandi Sabo. Her lecture addressed the increase in comorbidities among people. They had interactive sessions with the doctor and discussed their queries. Afterward, students made posters to raise awareness regarding diabetes, cancer, hypertension, etc. Following the end of the evening session, students were told the outline for the next day.
Day 3: Field Visit Village Teona Pujaria
All the arrangements were made for the field visit to the adopted village, Teona Pujaria. Students began their awareness campaign in the town by visiting the households individually. Villagers appreciated the diligent efforts made by the students. They also helped the sevadars prepare langar in the Gurudwara Sahib. After having the review meeting with the volunteers, the team leader presented the report and shared some ideas to make the following field visit more effective.
Day 4: Visiting Qila Mubarak
Students discussed during yoga classes that they were very excited to visit Qila Mubarak. Qila Mubarak, Bathinda, is considered the oldest surviving fort in India and was declared a fort of national importance by the Archeological Survey of India. One of the best things about visiting historical monuments is that you can live in that period. They also visited Takht Shri Damdama Sahib and had the blessings of the almighty.
Day 5: Learning Therapeutic Techniques of Physiotherapy
After completing their yoga sessions, students reached the seminar hall at 9 o’clock to attend an expert session chaired by Dr. Navjot Kaur (PT), Head of the Department of Physiotherapy. The “Physiofit: A Lecture on Therapeutic Exercises” lecture featured video projections to gain hands-on experience. Several fitness tests were done, such as triceps stretch, biceps stretch, pectoral stretch, shoulder shrugging, and heel and toe raise. After the tea break, Ms. Priyanka, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, took a session on a relaxation technique, JPMR. She elaborated on the significance of the JPMR technique and how it assists in enhancing the cognitive abilities of individuals.
Day 6: Physiotherapy Camp
To raise awareness regarding physical and mental wellness, students visited the remaining households in the adopted village, Teona Pujaria. This time, Dr. Ankita Saraswat (Physiotherapist), Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy, accompanied by her team, joined NSS volunteers. They conducted a physiotherapy camp in the village of Gurudwara Sahib. Almost 27 individuals were treated for struggling with osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, and prolapsed intervertebral disc (PIVD).
Day 7: Valedictory Session
The valedictory session of the seven-day NSS camp is featured with the presence of village panchayat Teona Pujaria. A Poster Competition was organized, and program winners received awards for their outstanding performance. Honorable Vice Chancellor Professor Gurmail Singh appreciated the efforts of the organizer crew, Dr. Janpreet Singh and Dr. Komalpreet Kaur, and the participants for the systematic organization of the incredible NSS Camp. Students delivered remarkable feedback and requested the organizing unit that they are looking forward to more such events.
