Establishment of Comfort Corner Raises Hopes for Many!

“In a room full of speakers, sometimes all you need is an attentive listener,” Lisa Gupta

Academic, social, and psychological challenges coexist with the excitement of student life. They hesitate to express their feelings because they are sometimes ensnared in a maze of complicated feelings. It creates a vicious cycle of negativity, and they discover illegitimate ways of escapism and, therefore, become deviant individuals.

Individuals suffering from mental illness feel disconnected from mainstream society and lose the meaning of their lives. The relevant treatment and inclusive support given to them helped them realize their immense potential and lead a meaningful life again. Keeping this in mind, the Department of Psychology formed a student counseling cell called “Comfort Corner” to address the challenges they face.

What does Comfort Corner offer?

The Department of Psychology realizes the requirement for a counseling center on campus. This initiative also complies with the UGC guidelines for establishing a Student Services Center (SSC). The Expert Team of Comfort Corner assists students in handling stress, anger, emotional breakdown, anxiety, etc. As the name suggests, they create a comfortable and empathetic space so that they can feel free to discuss their problems. It also assures confidentiality and takes care of one’s privacy.

The Comfort Corner aims at providing psycho-social aid and counseling to students so that they can cope with the challenges. It also aims to facilitate students’ emotional intelligence and improve their decision-making.

Significance of Awareness Drives

The Department of Psychology used to organize various events, such as expert talks, workshops, and interactive sessions, to raise awareness about mental disorders, early diagnosis, and treatment. Recently, Red Ribbon Club collaborated with Psychology Counseling Cell to host an expert talk on Alzheimer’s Disease. World Autism Awareness Day is also celebrated with full enthusiasm and the entire university community participated in it.

Coordinators of Comfort Corner

Dr. Ishrat Munawar, Ms. Priyanka, and Dr. Diksha Kapoor are coordinators of Comfort Corner and experts in the psychological realm. The major feature of this counseling center is that it provides services even after office hours. Students can consult the coordinators whenever they feel the need. Students can also approach interns if they hesitate to talk to professors. Ms. Karamdeep Kaur, Venus Kaur, Pragya Sharma, and Navist are students of psychology who help their peers learn coping techniques and manage stress and anxiety.

The institutes of higher education play an instrumental role in stabilizing the psychological states and learning environment of the students. Akal University provides a good platform where students can excel not only academically but also psychologically and socially. The consultant team of the counseling cell is highly cooperative and efficient in delivering their competent services.
