Building a Sustainable and Inclusive Future with NSS Cell of Akal University

Akal University’s NSS Cell proactively engages university community members in social service and fosters a sense of responsibility and compassion among them. Staying committed to this, we organize arrays of activities that help in the comprehensive development of our students. These include a Cleanliness Drive under Swachhata Hi Seva Drive, a Celebration of International Sign Day, and a Fire Safety and Training Session.

Fire Safety and Fire Fighting Training Session

The commitment to safety applicability is a crucial domain in any institute and negligence can bring disastrous implications. Akal University’s NSS Cell hosted a Fire Safety and Fire Fighting Training Session collaborating with NCC. Kuldeep Singh FSO, Punjab Fire and Emergency Services, Talwandi Sabo presided over the event.

Mr. Singh emphasized how appropriate deployment of safety measures can help to minimize the effects of any disaster. The major highlights of the event were an introduction to fire safety, types of fire and extinguishers, evacuation procedures, fire fighting techniques, and emergency response.

Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign

The Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) Campaign initiated by the National Service Scheme (NSS) aims to promote cleanliness at the pan-India level through community engagement. Under the umbrella of this visionary scheme, diverse activities are hosted such as cleanliness drives, health camps, awareness campaigns, etc. This year’s theme is entitled “Swabhav Swachhata- Sankar Swachhata”. Let us have a look at the glimpses of events arranged by our NSS Cell:

Cleanliness Drive by NSS Unit III

It is rightly said “Charity Begins at Home” so our NSS Unit III recently organized a cleanliness drive near the university premises. This vibrant initiative was headed by Dr. Janpreet Singh, NSS Coordinator. Almost 50 NSS volunteers enthusiastically participated in this cleanliness drive. The organizer NSS Unit III received appreciation remarks from Major General GS Lamba, Dean of Academic Affairs (DAA).

Poster Making Competition

To enhance the artistic caliber of students and to foster commitment towards cleanliness Poster Making Competition was organized. The event was held under the guidance of Honorable Vice Chancellor Professor Gurmail Singh. A total of 70 participants from various disciplines demonstrated their immense talent and creativity on the following themes:

  • Swachhata Hi Seva
  • Good Health & Well-being
  • Clear Water & Sanitation
  • Mega Cleanliness Drive

Mega Cleanliness Drive

The NSS Unit organized a mega cleanliness drive at the village of Bangi Ruldu/Bangi Kalan. Our NSS Coordinator, accompanied by 300 active volunteers, reached there to execute this mega drive. This awareness campaign was graced with dignitaries, including the Honorable Vice Chancellor AU, Director IQAC, Local Panchayat, School Principals, and the Bank Manager of the concerned village. This initiative received exceptional admiration from the village community and made them understand the significance of cleanliness in various aspects of life.

Celebrating International Day of Sign Languages

To commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages our NSS Unit VII hosted a spectacular event to endorse the significance of this day. The event aims to promote inclusivity and sensitivity among participants towards individuals suffering from hearing impairments. On this occasion Dr. Janpreet interacted with the students and shared his insightful views on the importance of sign language, he elaborated on how empathetic behavior can positively impact the hearing-impaired community. While highlighting the importance of Sign Language, he discussed that the UN has recognized sign language as a human right.

The successful completion of the above events is a testament to our allegiance to promoting community service, environmental awareness, and the quest to build an inclusive society. Engaging students in Fire Safety Training Sessions, Cleanliness Drives, and International Sign Day Celebrations certainly empower them to become responsible citizens. Youth can play a transformative role in the development of a harmonious society and they will also contribute to building sustainable surroundings.
