TMTW February Highlights – Academic Excellence, Intellectual Discussions, and Social Awareness

As February went on, Akal University continued promoting its core principles of social responsibility, scientific inquiry, environmental consciousness, and intellectual debate. The month reflected the diverse activities, from stimulating conversations about national economic policy to vibrant creative contests and successful social movements. Here are the major highlights of the month.

Discussion on Union Budget

A comprehensive discussion of the Union Budget was held to raise students’ financial literacy and economic understanding. Participants discussed economic policies, significant budgetary allocations, and their effects on various sectors, including employment, healthcare, and education. This insightful session encouraged the students to analyze the nation’s financial policies and take part in constructive debates on India’s economic outlook.

International Day for Women and Girls in Science

We all have witnessed the space journey of Sunita Williams which reflected how women are playing a pivotal role in the field of science. Considering that our department of Education has hosted powerpoint presentations and collage-making competitions to commemorate the special occasion which is International Day for Women and Girls in Science. The event aimed to bridge gender inequalities in this profession, and also to inspire young girls to pursue careers in science and research. Students were left feeling empowered and inspired by thought-provoking discussions.

Webinar on Market Failure of Environmental Goods and Possible Solutions

A webinar on the difficulties associated with environmental commodities’ market failure was held by the Department of Economics. The session was chaired by Dr. Showkat Ahmad Bhat, Associate Professor at Symbiosis School of Economics. In addition to discussing economic inefficiencies in environmental protection, experts offered sustainable solutions and regulatory interventions. Students gained a better understanding of environmental economics and the significance of corrective actions to eliminate market distortions.

A visit to the Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Center

Our Red Ribbon Club arranged a visit to the Drug Rehabilitation and De-Addiction Center. The main objective of the event was to educate the students regarding the impacts of drug abuse and make them understand the significance of rehabilitation. Students received a deeper understanding of addiction and treatment methods. This visit inculcated a sense of responsibility among students to actively participate in building a drug-free and healthier society.

World Wetland Day Celebration

The Department of Medical Sciences and Zoology celebrated the World Wetland Day with great enthusiasm. This event highlighted the vital role of wetlands in biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability. The event featured poster making, essay writing, and a speech competition. Such environment conservation initiatives are an indispensable part of the academic journey. These youngsters can play transformative roles in preventing climate change and conservation of the environment.

Webinar on Food-Planet-Health

Akal University’s NSS Cell hosted an enlightening webinar on Food, Planet, and Health. Ms. Nija, Outreach Coordinator from Vegan Outreach headed the session. The webinar highlighted the impact of food choices on environmental sustainability and health, emphasizing the adverse effects of non-vegetarian diets, and equally focusing on plant-based alternatives. The event underscored the role of NSS volunteers in spreading awareness about sustainable food choices.

Stone Painting Competition

Red Ribbon Club in collaboration with the Department of Physiotherapy organized a stone painting competition on HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse Awareness. Almost seventy-five visually represent their thoughts through stone painting. The event conspicuously fostered empathy, compassion, reduced stigma, and civic responsibility among participants. The Red Ribbon Club will continue such awareness campaigns with innovative initiatives.

Alumni Interaction

Ms. Ravinder Kaur, Alumni, Department of Physics interacted with the students. She shared her academic journey, emphasizing the role of structured curriculum, and supportive faculty members in her success. Ms. Ravinder is pursuing her PhD, assisted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). She was the recipient of the INSPIRE Fellowship. She guided the students regarding the application process to secure the INSPIRE Fellowship.

World Cancer Day – Raising Hopes

As part of World Cancer Day, our Department of Medical Sciences organized an awareness program focusing on cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment techniques. The event was organized under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Komalpreet Kaur and Dr. Kiran Rani. The activity was intended to dispel myths about cancer and make a change towards adopting a proactive and healthier lifestyle.

International Workshop on STATA, R, and VOSviewer

The International Workshop on STRARA, R, and VOSviewer, which addressed state-of-the-art research tools and methodologies, was one of the month’s major academic activities. At this workshop, researchers and academics from different universities learned how to use these tools for research visualization, bibliometric analysis, and data analysis. Participants were able to elevate their research skills and integrate modern technological advancements into academic writing through hands-on training.

Exciting Sports Events

Sportsmanship was on full display at the campus as students participated in cricket, basketball, and volleyball matches. In addition to improving students’ physical health, these intense competitions helped to strengthen the cooperative and tenacious student culture. The thrilling games, which were marked by intense competitiveness and outstanding performances, enthralled spectators and fostered a spirit of athletic enthusiasm.
At Akal University, February was a month of social interaction, creativity, and intellectual development. Every event, from scientific festivals and economic discussions to creative contests, eco-awareness exercises, and exhilarating sporting events, aided in the holistic development of students.
