Akal University’s NSS Cell and Eco Club conducted a series of activities to celebrate World Environment Day. Our honorable Dean of Academic Affairs, Major General GS Lamba, conducted an awareness session to enlighten participants regarding environmental sustainability and climate action.
The session began with a warm welcome by Dr. Janpreet Singh, NSS Coordinator who emphasized the role of youngsters in protecting the environment. He also gave a brief regarding our university’s initiatives regarding environmental action.
A Step Towards Sustainable Future
In his insightful session, entitled “The Imperative of Environmental Protection: Our Role, Our Future,” Major General GS Lamba led the audience on an eye-opening tour of the state of affairs of our world. He drew a detailed picture of climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution, and depletion of resources—not as remote threats, but as near certainties that are rewriting our lives and our destinies. His keynote address made clear that saving the environment is not a burden, but a deep opportunity.
Universities as Change Makers
Major General Lamba discussed the catalytic role that universities can play in responding to the environmental crisis. He reminded everyone that academic institutions are ideal platforms where research, innovation, leadership, and policy engagement can thrive.
He illustrated instances such as PROJECT KHAOWARE, which is a student-led initiative on edible cutlery. He went on to show how small, creative ideas can have a long-term impact on the environment.
Interactive Session
The session was not a mere monologue as it encouraged active student participation through the vibrant Q&A segment. Students freely raised their queries regarding practical sustainability, carbon footprints, green entrepreneurship, and initiatives at the institutional levels. An in-depth and pragmatic answer from Major General Lamba brought clarity to the minds of the students.
The session ended with a sincere vote of thanks from Dr. Shusheel Kumar, Department of Physics who thanked Major General Lamba for his convincing speech and the lively participation of the students. He also thanked the NSS Cell and Eco Club for making such a worthwhile initiative possible.
