That’s the spirit !
In the evening in the girls’ sports field, you’ll find an inspiring sight – a group of young women, their focus unwavering, movements swift and graceful, practicing the ancient Sikh martial art of Gatka. The sound of wooden sticks striking in rhythm fills the air, echoing the strength and spirit of generations past. It’s a sound that speaks of confidence, empowerment, and cultural pride.
At Akal University Talwandi Sabo, courage isn’t just a concept—it’s a way of life.
What makes the Gatka initiative special
Gatka is more than just a martial art – it’s a philosophy of fearlessness and discipline. It teaches balance, awareness, and control, both physical and mental. For the girls of Akal University, these sessions have become a space where they not only learn to defend themselves but also discover the depth of their inner strength. Each practice is a step toward self-reliance, a celebration of resilience, and a reconnection with the rich Sikh heritage that values both courage and compassion.
In today’s world, where young women often face challenges to their safety and confidence, Gatka offers a transformative path. It trains the body to be agile and strong, but more importantly, it trains the mind to stay calm under pressure. Many of our participants describe the experience as empowering—helping them carry themselves with greater assurance, awareness, and dignity in everyday life. The lessons they learn extend far beyond the training ground, shaping their attitude and approach toward challenges in studies, work, and society.
What makes the Gatka initiative at Akal University truly unique is the way it blends tradition with modern empowerment. It revives a historical art form that once defined the valor of Sikh warriors, while giving today’s young women a practical, confident way to face the world. It’s not just about learning defensive techniques—it’s about building strength from within. The practice cultivates stamina, patience, and focus, teaching the importance of discipline and mindfulness in every move.
“It’s not about fighting,” shares one of the participants, her eyes gleaming with pride. “It’s about discovering who we are and becoming and what we want to become -strong, fearless, and capable of protecting ourselves and others.”
Her words capture the essence of what Gatka stands for at Akal University. It’s a bridge between the past and the present, uniting cultural identity with the modern spirit of women’s empowerment.
Empowered Girls make good Leaders !
As our girls continue to train and inspire others, the message is clear: empowerment begins within. When women connect to their roots and embrace their strength, they become unstoppable. The Gatka program is not just an activity—it’s a movement, a journey of self-discovery, and a celebration of heritage.
Here’s to the fearless girls of Akal University—warriors in spirit, leaders in the making
