In response to the urgent need for environmentally conscious living and sustainable lifestyles, our university’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell launched a series of activities under the Environment Education Program with the compelling topic “Save Energy, Save Water.” The event is extensively supported by The Punjab State Council of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. This remarkable initiative successfully united the youngsters, educators, and the local community to participate in the journey of sustainable living actively.
Over several weeks, the program combined artistic expression, community engagement, and academic knowledge. The program successfully assisted participants in internalizing and adopting habits essential to environmental sustainability through a comprehensive series of expert lectures, workshops, competitions, and outreach efforts.
Awakening Minds – Expert Sessions and Awareness Initiatives
The campaign commenced with an encouraging expert presentation by Jatinderpal Singh, who set the pace for the whole campaign by talking about the scientific basis of environmental degradation, energy usage patterns, and mitigating the water cris is.
Subsequent to this, the university organized a special Lifestyle Workshop that familiarize students with day-to-day practices supportive of sustainability. Dr. Uday Pratap Singh and Prof. Archana Chaudhary led a series of expert sessions throughout the workshop which focused on various critical issues associated with water and energy conservation. Prof. Amrik Singh Ahluwalia, the former pro-vice-chancellor of Eternal University in Baru Sahib, delivered the keynote address.
The two-day workshop persuaded participants to think about their lifestyle decisions and rethink common practices from an environmental perspective.
Another highlight session was taken by Mr. Vinod Garg, Department of Science and Technology, Central University of Punjab, who chaired a combined expert lecture cum hands-on training session. The participants took part in interactive demonstrations on applications of solar energy, rainwater harvesting structures, and practical ways to avoid water wastage. This was not a mere lecture; it was an experiential exercise that converted theoretical expertise into practical application.
Subsequently, Er. Baldev Singh Saran, Former Chairman and Managing Director of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. (PSPCL) shared his insightful views regarding sustainability. In his presentation, he enlightened the audience about how energy-efficient buildings, intelligent water management systems, and low-carbon transportation solutions are going to help in building a sustainable future.
Creativity Meets Advocacy – Engaging Competitions
To continue the passion for conservation, a series of competitions was also conducted, providing students with a medium to express their imagination and concern for env.
- Speech Competition: Students expressed the need for environmental conservation.
- Poster Presentation: Visual presentation on water and energy conservation topics.
- Short Video Competition: Innovative video messages for adopting sustainable practices.
- Model Making Competition: Students constructed functional models highlighting renewable energy and water conservation measures.
Winners of these competitions were awarded in the esteemed presence of dignitaries.
Grassroots Influence – Local Campaigns
In keeping with the spirit of the theme, the program reached out beyond the campus into the villages namely Bangi Nihal Singh Vala and Bangi Ruldu where more than 400 homes were covered under a systematic door-to-door awareness campaign. The campaign was strategically divided into two phases: Impact Analysis Study (Pre-Intervention Phase) and Awareness and Educational Outreach (Intervention Phase).
Ms. Mitali, a student of the Department of Mathematics received remarkable appreciation for her exemplary performance. She visited several houses to aware them of resource conservation and climate change. Her relentless efforts were an incredible display of youth activism for environment conservation.
Pledge and Valedictory Ceremony – A Common Goal
All of the participants came together for a formal pledge ceremony at the end of the program, when they vowed to live sustainably and to be environmental stewards.
The Honorable Registrar gave an awareness speech during the valedictory meeting. He encouraged students to take inspiration from countries that have implemented robust climate legislation, such as Sweden, Germany, and Japan. He reiterated that issues like resource depletion and climate change are current issues that need to be addressed without any further delay.
Professor Sukhjeet Singh, the convener of the program, presented a comprehensive summary of the events, celebrating the efforts of every participant and collaborator. In his vote of thanks, he expressed deep gratitude to the Punjab State Council of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the University Administration, the NSS Cell, and especially to Mitali for their spectacular support.
The Environment Education Program “Save Water, Save Energy” was a revolutionary initiative. Through the series of activities including expert sessions, hands-on training, and various competitions youngsters are empowered to implement their learning to save our environment. It built a sense of responsibility and enthusiastically spread awareness among their communities.
