Crafting Values Through Education – Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations at Akal University

Reviving Gandhi Ji’s Vision of Education Through Work

On October 1, 2025, the Department of Education, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, celebrated Gandhi Jayanti with a special program titled “Learning by Doing – Nai Talim in Action.”
The event, coordinated by Dr. Mudasir Amin and organized by Jasmeen Kaur and Namsheerat Kaur (B.A.B.Ed. 5th Semester), beautifully captured Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of Nai Talim—an education system that combines learning with productive work, creativity, and moral values.

Honoring Gandhi Ji’s Philosophy in Modern Education

The program opened with a warm welcome and a reflection on Gandhi Ji’s concept of Basic Education, which emphasizes that education should nurture the head, heart, and hand.
Students delivered insightful speeches on the relevance of his teachings in today’s fast-paced world, highlighting how simplicity, truth, and dignity of labour remain timeless virtues.

Hands-On Learning – Creativity in Action

Participants showcased Gandhi Ji’s “Learning by Doing” philosophy through practical demonstrations of various handicrafts including:

  • Spinning wheel (Charkha)
  • Tie and dye
  • Paper mâché
  • Bottle decoration
  • Embroidery
  • Paper crafts

Each creative display illustrated how education through work fosters self-reliance, imagination, and respect for manual labour, reflecting Gandhi Ji’s belief that learning must engage both mind and hand.

Reflection and Learning Integration

A reflection circle followed, where group leaders shared how these activities connect with academic subjects such as science, mathematics, and art—demonstrating the interdisciplinary essence of Nai Talim.
This exercise brought to light Gandhi Ji’s holistic approach, where learning, values, and practical skills go hand in hand to create socially responsible individuals.

Pledge for Simplicity and Service

The event concluded with a heartfelt pledge led by Dr. Mudasir Amin, where students and faculty vowed to:

  • Live simply and truthfully
  • Respect all forms of labour
  • Practice non-violence and compassion
  • Serve society with honesty and dedication

With closing reflections emphasizing that education is not mere preparation for life but life itself, the event successfully revived the essence of Gandhi Ji’s educational ideals at Akal University.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through “Learning by Doing – Nai Talim in Action,” Akal University once again proved its dedication to value-based education that nurtures intellect, empathy, and skill.
The event not only celebrated Gandhi Jayanti but also served as a reminder that education, rooted in work and values, builds the foundation for a peaceful and progressive society.
