Akal University’s Department of Physiotherapy Explores the Future of Physiotherapy at National Seminar

Nurturing the Young Healthcare Professionals

Akal University’s Department of Physiotherapy organized a visit to Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU), Fatehgarh Sahib, to attend a National Seminar on “The Future of Physiotherapy – Navigating the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021. The major objective behind attending the seminar was to enhance knowledge and clinical practice in physiotherapy.

Stepping into the World of Physiotherapy

The program began with an introductory session conducted by Dr. Supreet Bindra, Head of Department of Physiotherapy, SGGSWU, who warmly welcomed dignitaries, panelists, and participants. He highlighted the objective of the seminar to bridge the gap between policy frameworks and ground realities in the practice of physiotherapy. Participants were excited to dive into the
Following the welcome, the keynote seminar was delivered by Dr. Yagna Unmesh Shukla, Hon’ble Chairperson of the National Commission for Allied Health Professions (NCAHP), New Delhi. She enlightened the students while sharing her invaluable insights on:-
• The purpose and scope of the Act are to standardize allied health education.
• The regulatory framework is designed to safeguard patients and enhance professional accountability.
• The recognition of physiotherapy as a core healthcare profession.
• The potential opportunities for physiotherapists in clinical care, community services, education, and research.
She inspired participants to perceive physiotherapy as more than a profession, as it has an altruistic motive of serving humanity.

Exploring the Laboratories and OPD

This visit also featured a guided tour of the academic and clinical facilities of the university. Students of Akal University, accompanied by Dr. Navjot Kaur, Dr. Ritu, and Dr. Kamaldeep Jindal, explored SGGSWU’s Laboratories and OPD :

  • Physiotherapy Out-Patient Department (OPD) – Students observed live rehabilitation sessions, modern electrotherapy equipment, exercise therapy setups, and patient management techniques.
  • Anatomy and Physiology Laboratories – The exposure included study of anatomical models, preserved specimens, and experimental demonstrations, which deepened their understanding of human structure and function.
  • Exercise Therapy Laboratory – Students examined modern devices and equipment used for strengthening, conditioning, and rehabilitation exercises, giving them hands-on familiarity with the latest therapeutic tools.

A Vibrant Panel Discussion – Policy to Reality

The keynote note session was followed by the panel Discussion on “Policy to Reality – The Future of Physiotherapy” The seminar continued with a highly engaging panel discussion featuring distinguished panelists including Dr. A. G. K. Sihna, Professor, Department of Physiotherapy, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr. V. P. Gupta, Senior Physiotherapy Expert and Academic Leader, Dr. Manu Goyal, Faculty, Department of Physiotherapy, Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU), Ambala, and Dr. Pankajpreet Singh, Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, SGGSWU, Fatehgarh Sahib.

Highlights of the Panel Discussion

• The future scope of physiotherapy in India and internationally.
• They discussed challenges faced by physiotherapy students including limited clinical placements, employment opportunities, and recognition.
• The impact of the NCAHP Act on education standards, professional identity, and job security.
• There is a need for research, evidence-based practice, and inter-professional collaboration in advancing the profession.

Captivating Experience for Youngsters

This visit was an incredible experience for the students, and they found it transformative and inspiring. This seminar can be considered a milestone in the academic journey of these young healthcare professionals.
