The establishment of the Herbal Garden is a demonstration of commitment towards the conservation of biodiversity and fosters connectivity towards nature. Herbal Garden will provide medicinal benefits and act as an educational resource for the researchers to conduct their research.
Advantages of Herbal Gardening
Growing a life around can be the most satisfactory feeling one can enjoy. Building an herbal garden with fresh herbs offers limitless benefits. Plants in herbal gardens contain properties like antibacterial, and antifungal, and herbs act as antioxidants that can fight infections, cough, and cold without medicinal interventions.
Installation of Herbal Garden under Expert Guidance
This campaign for the establishment of an Herbal Garden is instructed by an expert team from Khadoor Sahib chaired by Vir Davinder Singh Ji. Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad Wani, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany has initiated the plantation drive. There are a total of 40 medicinal plants of different varieties that are planted. Following are the major plant varieties
Tulsi
The Tulsi plant is predominantly grown in Central India. Because of its numerous Ayurvedic benefits, it is known as the “Queen of Herbs”. It has anti-microbial and therapeutic properties and protects from physical, metabolic, and psychological exhaustion.
Moringa
The Moringa plant acts as a food source in some parts of the world. It contains nutrients such as vitamins, and proteins that fight malnutrition. Its antioxidant properties help protect against cell damage. Moringa helps with asthma, managing cholesterol, etc. It treats skin infections, stomach ulcers, heart problems, etc.
Cymbopogon nardus
Cymbopogon nardus also known as Citronella oil. It contains antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It is native to tropical Asia. Citronella oil is useful in the prevention of pests, insects, etc.
Sapindus mukorossi
Reetha scientifically known as Sapindus mukorossi carries several herbal benefits. It acts as a natural hair cleanser, removing dead skin cells, acne, etc. It also has insect repellent properties and it is an eco-friendly alternative for detergent.
Brahmi
Brahmi is also a plant-based herb that offers significant remedial solutions for several problems such as inflammation, congestion in the chest, and infection. It is very good for our nervous system and acts as a natural immunity booster. Today our excessive exposure to digital gadgets has adversely impacted our memory retaining power. Consuming Brahmi with milk enhances our memory.
Terminalia
Traditionally, Terminalia is a widely used medicinal plant to treat a multitude of ailments, cardiovascular diseases, infections, etc. It has antifungal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
Albizia lebbeck
Albizia lebbeck is a deciduous woody tree used in treating respiratory diseases such as asthma, cough, cold allergic infections, etc. It neutralizes toxins in the body, has anti-diabetic properties, and acts as an immune modulator.
The foundation of the herbal garden beautifies the landscape of the university campus. Also creates a living laboratory for researchers to execute their research work. The herbal shrubs and plants can address the medicinal needs of the local communities. Overall such sustainable ventures will prove to be a blessing for society.
