Installing Solar Panels at Akal University – Practical Hands-on Training and Learning Beyond Classrooms

Practical Hands-on Training installing Solar Panels

The EcoClub and Physics Department recently organized a Hands-On Practical Training Session on Solar Energy Systems, led by Mr. Jatinder Pal Singh, Sustainability Lead at The Kalgidhar Trust. This unique session sparked curiosity, giving students the chance to explore solar technology not just in theory, but through real installations on campus.
At Akal University, education isn’t confined to books, it’s about preparing students to tackle real-world challenges.

Key Highlights from the Training Session

Students gained practical knowledge and skills that will help them lead in the renewable energy sector:

  • Calculating Solar Capacity: Understanding efficiency based on sunlight and tilt angles.
  • On-Grid vs. Off-Grid Systems: How excess power can be sold or stored in batteries.
  • DC-to-AC Conversion: Powering homes, water pumps, and appliances through inverters.
  • Environmental Impact: How solar energy reduces carbon emissions and supports India’s Paris Agreement goals.

Shaping Sustainable Leaders

Why this matters

This wasn’t just basic training into setting up solar panels, it was a hands-on journey into sustainability. Students measured power outputs, analyzed solar energy systems, and connected their learning to global challenges like climate change and energy transition.

Important Insights

Installing solar panels brings a chain of benefits that extend far beyond just generating clean electricity.
Even a modest small rooftop solar system, easily produces around few thousand units of clean power annually.
This reduces carbon emissions by nearly many Tons of Carbon dioxide every year, which is equivalent to planting about a few hundred trees.
This in turn saves up to Thousands of liters of water that would otherwise be consumed in thermal power plants, as well as in growing and watering those trees; and this reduces the need for mining and land used for fossil fuel energy. There is also equivalent saving of acres of land used to grow that number of trees.
On the financial side, such a system can save many Thousands, or Lakhs, of Rupees annually in electricity bills. When these savings are channeled into education, they can cover essentials like books, uniforms, or even a year of schooling for several rural children. Thus, solar power not only helps conserve nature but also transforms clean energy into a force for social upliftment, turning sunlight into both sustainability and opportunity.

With these insights, Akal University students are now equipped to lead India’s clean energy revolution, making them not only graduates but also changemakers for a sustainable tomorrow.

What’s Next? The Green Movement at Akal University

The success of this training session is just the beginning. Through the EcoClub’s initiatives, students will continue to explore renewable energy, environmental conservation, and sustainable practices.
